About the Country
Sri Lanka is a small island that somehow fits mountains, beaches, rainforests, and ancient cities into a few hours' drive of each other. You can watch the sunrise from Sigiriya rock in the morning and be on a beach in Mirissa by afternoon. It's also one of the world's most important Buddhist countries, with temples and pilgrimage sites going back over two thousand years, including Anuradhapura and Kandy's Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. Add tea plantations around Nuwara Eliya, a scenic train ride through the hill country, and wildlife safaris in Yala or Wilpattu for leopards and elephants, and it's easy to see why a single trip here rarely feels like enough.
